Bit of a Rough Night

Hi everyone,

Here's the latest on Ethan's situation. (Kevin is screaming in the background, so I'm going to keep it brief) This past Friday Ethan went down and had his first surgery in Boston. They were doing some exploratory work, dilating his esophagus back to 10mm again, and perform a procedure called Nissen Fundoplication. There's a picture of what that is above. Basically they take part of his stomach and wrap it around the esophagus. This will help him greatly reduce the amount of reflux he has (in theory), and hopefully will allow him to start oral feeding sooner. It was a very long surgery, over 8 hours, and since then Ethan has been pretty beat up.

The surgery itself was successful, and they did dilate him back to 10mm. The bad news is they did find that one of his vocal chords was damaged from one of his previous surgeries. They don't believe this will cause him any real issues long term, but that still remains to be seen.

Things took an unexpected turn last night about 12:45am when we got a call from the hospital. Ethan had to go to 100% support on the ventilator, and was having some severe respiratory problems. They called the surgical team back in to review what's going on, and we are still waiting to hear back some more information. However, since just before 1am he's gone back down on the ventilator to 60%. We are hopeful it was just pain related from the surgery, and once they get his meds under control he will be much more at ease.

I'll update more later, but I just wanted to continue to ask for everyone's prayers. It seems that every time we feel we've permanently turned a corner, something else sneaks back up. He's going to get through this, and get better. I just think this surgery was tough on him.

God bless you all,

Ryan, Tina, Ethan, and Kevin
